Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at the start, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi low provides an overwhelming assortment of betting possibilities and because you have several players battling for the high, and several battling for the low. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
