Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha hi-low starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants often get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in nearly all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
While it seems complex initially, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game simply enough. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing array of wagering choices and seeing that you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, along with several battling for the low.
