Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha hi lo starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some players get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complex at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an exciting range of betting choices and because you have many players trying for the high hand, along with many trying for the low.
