Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha Hi-Lo begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical notion in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming assortment of wagering options and because you have several players trying for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
