Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players often get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
Although it seems complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha High-Low provides an exciting assortment of betting choices and because you have several individuals battling for the high, and several trying for the low.
