Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants can get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical notion in nearly all poker games.
A lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
Although it seems complicated initially, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming array of betting choices and because you have several players battling for the high hand, along with many shooting for the low hand.
