Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants often get flustered. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in nearly every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of the game easily enough.
