Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha hi/lo begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many players often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in just about every poker game.
The low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at the outset, following a few rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi/low provides an exciting array of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many individuals shooting for the high hand, and several battling for the low.
